Heritage / Heirloom Tomatoes
Successional planning. Another batch of tomatoes planted in the compost beds in the hoop house / poly tunnel. Hopefully just in time for the late summer.
Heirloom tomatoes are a diverse group of tomato varieties that have been passed down through generations due to their exceptional taste, unique appearance, and genetic purity. Unlike hybrid tomatoes, which are bred for uniformity and shelf life, heirloom tomatoes are valued for their rich flavors and historical significance.
Genetic Purity: Heirloom tomatoes are open-pollinated, meaning they reproduce naturally through wind, insects, or human intervention without genetic modification. This allows them to retain their genetic characteristics over generations.
Variety: They come in a wide range of colors, shapes, and sizes. Colors can include red, pink, yellow, orange, green, purple, black, and even bi-colored or striped patterns. Shapes range from round and oblong to ribbed and heart-shaped.
Flavor: Heirloom tomatoes are renowned for their superior taste, which can range from sweet and tangy to rich and complex. Their flavor profiles are often more robust compared to hybrid tomatoes.
